The reader is max up to 6 m for ideal case, in this scenario, the kind of tags also matter.
Did I bundle a long tag in the box for you? did you use it to test the distance?
Some smaller tags may not be able to guarantee the max reading range.
Studies also mention the direction of tag movement & orientation of tag also matters. Did you try rotate your reader angle or position to the tag movement to see if there is significant difference?
And if 5 m is your expectation, I think you should better take a bigger antenna liked ours with 25m. theoretically the reading range determine by the size of antenna.
And manufacturer figure for this reader is 50 tags without collision.
